First National Bank holding community Shred Day Sept. 7

CRESTON – Last year, identity theft crimes in the United States reached an all-time high with Javelin Research reporting that about 1 in 15 Americans (6.64%) were victimized. 

And, those crimes have not slowed down in 2018. That said, one of the best ways to protect yourself is to securely destroy sensitive documents like old tax returns, bank statements and cancelled checks. It’s also good practice to destroy outdated and unwanted computers,  laptops and cell phones that may have sensitive information stored on them. 

First National Bank will give you an opportunity to do all of the above when they host a community Shred Day from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at their main bank location (101 W. Adams St.) in Creston.

“This is a free event to the public,” said Julie Lanning, cashier and vice president at First National Bank. “You don’t have to be a customer of ours to attend. As bankers, we want the public to be mindful of how they dispose of unwanted documents and electronics that could otherwise fall into the wrong hands. There has never been a better time to be diligent in protecting your identity and credit.”

For this event, First National Bank has partnered with Info Dog Security (IDS). All documents and electronics will be shred on-site that day and IDS will have an external video monitor on their truck so the public can view their documents and unwanted electronics being shredded.  

The public is invited to bring up to three boxes of documents to shred free of charge. The bank will be accepting computer monitors that day, too, with newer monitors costing $10 and older CRT monitors costing $35 each to be disposed of properly.

As for eWaste, please don’t bring household appliances, microwaves, hazardous materials, televisions, DVDs or compact discs.  No business dumping, please.
