Important: FNB improving security June 4, outdated browsers need updated

It's no secret that, in today's world, fraudsters are continuing to become more advanced with their online attacks against consumers.

So, First National Bank will soon be making a move to stifle those online threats. On June 4, we will be upgrading our website (www.fnbc.bank) to connect exclusively through TLS 1.2, which will ensure that your information remains private and secure.

With this move, we will no longer support TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1. That means older browsers will not open our bank websites after the date mentioned above.

Most browsers have supported TLS 1.2 for several years. Our reports show that less than 1 percent of FNB customers still utilize outdated browsers. Use the buttons below to find out your current browser version along with which browsers support TLS 1.2.

The following browsers DO support TLS 1.2:

Microsoft Edge: All versions supported
Microsoft Internet Explorer: IE Version 11 or higher
Mozilla Firefox: Version 27 or higher
Google Chrome: Version 38 or higher
Apple Safari: Version 7 and higher for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and higher

What if my device does have a TLS 1.2 supported browser, but I still cannot view the website?

Once you have confirmed you are using a supported browser (listed above), please follow the instructions below for your specific browser to enable SSL versions TLS 1.2.

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click Alt T and select "Internet Options"
  • Select the "Advanced" tab
  • Scroll down to the "Security" section
  • Locate and check "Use TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2"
  • Then, press the "OK" button

• Google Chrome
  • Open Google Chrome
  • Click Alt F and select "Settings"
  • Scroll down and select "Show advanced settings..."
  • Scroll down to the Network section and click on "Change proxy settings..."
  • Select the "Advanced" tab
  • Scroll down to the "Security" section
  • Locate and check "Use TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2
  • Then, press the "OK" button

  • Open FireFox
  • Type in "about:config" in the URL bar and press Enter
  • Scroll down to "security.tls.version.max" and press enter
  • Set the value to 3
  • Then, press the "OK" button

  • Click on "Security Protocols..."
  • Press the "OK" button

  • There are no options for enabling SSL protocols. If you are using Safari version 7 or greater, TLS 1.2 is automatically enabled.

What is TLS?

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security and is a used to establish a secure communications channel between two systems. It is used to authenticate one or both systems and protect the confidentiality and integrity of information that passes between systems. Recently fraudsters have found vulnerabilities in older TLS versions.

Why do I need to update my browser?

Many of you may recall the “Poodle,” or “Heartbleed” attacks in the past. With the Poodle attack, a hacker can force your browser to downgrade to an older TLS version, which is far less secure than today's standards. A browser using older TLS is vulnerable enough to let hackers spy on the data traveling to and from your computer. That means they could spy on your emails, banking or anything else.  These risks have been addressed with SSL versions TLS 1.2 which means your connection will be more secure.

What does this mean for you?

Certain users that utilize older browsers may not have the ability to support TLS 1.2 and will not be able to access our website at Bank-Northwest.com or online account information.  You will need to upgrade your current browser, enable your SSL, or install another browser to continue to access our website and your Online Banking or Business Online.
